Overview of Google Earth Lit Trips

"Google Earth allows you to travel the world through a virtual globe and view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, and much more. With Google Earth's rich, geographical content, you are able to experience a more realistic view of the world. You can fly to your favorite place, search for businesses and even navigate through directions. It's all up to you!" (Google Earth)

So.... What Exactly Are Google Earth Lit Trips?

PURPOSE:  CREATING engaging and relevant literary experiences for students.

Students develop “3-dimensional” reading experiences by placing other readers “inside the story” traveling alongside the characters.

Google Lit Trips mark the journeys of characters from famous literature on the surface of Google Earth. At each location along the journey, students construct place marks with pop-up windows (info boxes) containing a variety of resources including media, summaries, and links to supplementary information about “real world” references made in that particular portion of the story.  Google trips can be developed for all curricular areas based on both fiction and non-fiction.

OBJECTIVE:  LIT TRIPS are designed to stimulate higher level thinking skills and to connect the story’s themes and messages to the issues of the real world in which students live.
